The membership and board of directors of Sister Cities Yorktown are pleased to announce the award of two teacher grants and one student scholarship to York County Schools for the 2013-2014 school year.

A grant of $500 each semester will be awarded to teachers of French to help develop and support plans that further Yorktown’s relationship with Port-Vendres. Examples include but are not limited to:

• Development of student-to-student communication between students of Port-Vendres and Yorktown
• Class projects
• Participation in cultural events
• Innovative use of technology in the foreign language classroom

Also approved was a scholarship of $1,000 per year to help students of French who wish to participate in a student exchange with Port-Vendres but who may have financial need. York County high school students traveled to the Port-Vendres region in 2012. In October, these students will host a group of French students for a variety of activities, including Yorktown Day.

Both the grant and scholarship programs will be established under the umbrella of the York Foundation for Public Education.

Sister Cities Yorktown has been working for three years toward the goal of making its relationship with Port-Vendres one that enhances cultural and educational opportunities for French teachers and students of York County. Congratulations to members Chris Hudson, Gabrielle Glatt, Roberta Bockrath and Sandy Matthews for their leaderhip on this initiative.
