The passing of Georges Michel of Port-Vendres

Georges Michel, far right, with members of Port-Vendres d’Abord, among the original architects of the sister city relationship between Port-Vendres France, and Yorktown, Virginia in 1990. With Georges are Antoinette Quintilla, far left, and Anne-Marie de Cruz, also deceased.

It is with great sadness we mourn the passing of Georges Michel of Port-Vendres, France, on January 25, (2020). Georges was a long-time friend of Sister Cities Yorktown. He was one of the first to visit Yorktown, Virginia, when the jumelage was established, and he made many more trips to the U.S.

He was loyal, generous and diligent about promoting our mission of international friendship, documenting our activities with his camera and making many friends. Today, we all share stories and memories, paying tribute to Georges’ wonderful spirit and joie de vivre.

Attached is the tribute read by Port-Vendres Mayor Jean-Pierre Romero at his funeral on Jan. 28. A small tribute from Sister Cities Yorktown also was read. We encourage you to share memories of Georges here.
